Welcome to Summer Art Challenge 1. I will be posting drawing challenges three days a week. Your drawing will improve greatly if you draw daily. One tip is to create a handy art tote with pencils and a sketchpad that you can tote along with you. Suddenly those boring car rides and wait times become an opportunity to draw and create.
Each challenge will consist of a doodle project, and a how-to-drawing project. Feel free to complete all or just stop at one. The important thing is that you are practicing your drawing projects. This month I will be concentrating on botanical (plant) drawings.
Because we are studying flowers this month, I thought a great artist to check out this month would be Georgia O'Keeffe. If you would like to know more about her, check out the link above.
Let's Get Started!
Summer Art Challenge #1
Learn to Draw a Daisy
Daily Doodle
Just watch the first half of this video today. We will finish it in Challenge #2.
Not only is color important to our art compositions, it can effect the choices we make in our clothing, food, and furnishings. Color can even alter our mood and effect our appetite.
If you would like to learn more about color, below is a link to a interesting website I that explains the color wheel and color theory.
I apologize for my delay in posting this weeks lesson material. This week flew by. I can't believe it is already Thursday!
This week we will add two fundamental building blocks of art.
1. The art element texture.
Here is a couple of simple videos for learning about texture.
Here is an Art Lesson with Sharon Jeffus on Texture and Value. Link
2. The art principle Unity.
Here is a couple of short videos demonstrating Unity.
Mission # 6
Your 5th mission, should you choose to accept it, is to practice drawings for the draw string backpack we will complete next week.
You may draw whatever you like, but again this week we will be practicing a different type of drawing that will help you overall in your drawing skills. Enjoy the process. Remember practice makes better. Don't forget to bring your practice drawings to show the class and add to your portfolio.
This week we will be be practicing drawing trees .
I will continue to post art lessons and information on this blog during our summer break, so stop by often and check it out. I hope you had a great time at Franklin this spring semester!
This week I was pleased to see some of the drawings that you worked on during the week. One student even brought a mug she worked on during the week. Keep up the good work!
Next we talked further about the fundamental building blocks of art.
We are finding that we don't have enough time in class to talk about all the art fundamentals on our list, so please watch the videos. If you didn't color your color wheel, be sure and do that this week. : )
Here is another video on the color wheel. It is more informative then last week's video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEi9fnCXk9Y

Mission # 4
Your 4th mission, should you choose to accept it, is to practice drawings for the T-Shirt art project we will complete next week. I will have alcohol available for you to use if you want more of a Tye Dye look.
This week we began the hour by showing the drawings that we worked on during the week.
We didn't talk about our next two fundamental building blocks of art, because we needed to move onto our project. I hope you can watch the videos below so that we can add these two more fundamentals to our list. Also, I have linked the color version of your fundamentals book so that you can see the color wheel.
1. The art element color.
Here is a nice simple Video for learning the color wheel.
Book Link (Go to pages 9-11) You will find that the color wheel is one of your most helpful tools.
Next we moved on to our main project, designing our Mugs.
They have been baked! I will hopefully be able to post pictures today.
Mission #3
Your 3rd mission, should you choose to accept it, is to practice drawings for the framed art project we will complete next week. This is a nice project for mixed media. You may want to use watercolor or add dimension to your project. The finished project will be 8.5" x 7".
You may draw whatever you like, but again this week we will be practicing a different type of drawing that will help you overall in your drawing skills. Enjoy the process. Remember practice makes better. Don't forget to bring your practice drawings to show the class and add to your portfolio.
This week we will be be practicing drawing animals .
Can't get enough? Here is some drawings to try just for fun:

Next we moved on to our main project, designing coasters. They will go great with the mugs that we will design next week.
Mission #2
Your 2nd mission, should you choose to accept it, is to practice drawings for the mug project we will complete next week. You may draw whatever you like on your mugs, but again this week we will be practicing a different type of drawing that will help you overall in your drawing skills. Enjoy the process. Remember practice makes better. Don't forget to bring your practice drawings to show the class and add to your portfolio.
(Note: We will be drawing with regular sharpies on the mugs because the cost of oil based sharpies are prohibitive. The mugs will be baked to help your drawings last longer, but they will eventually wash off. If you would like a more permanent solution you are welcome to bring your own oil based marker for a more permanent drawing. Walmart carries paint markers for around $2 each.)
This week we will be be exploring and practicing the art form of lettering.
