Week 2

Watercolors & sharpie art idea
Example of Sharpie Art mixed with Water Colors
                                               Found on insightsandbellylaughs.com

This week we began the hour by showing the drawings that we worked on during the week.  Nice job!

Next we talked further about the fundamental building blocks of art.  We added two more fundamentals to our list.

1.  The art element shape.

  • Here is a nice simple Video for drawing with shapes.
  • Here is another Sharron Jeffus video on drawing pumpkins with shape.  Link

2.  The art principle Emphasis.

  • Here is a short video demonstrating emphasis.  Link
Then we went a step further and talked about the rule of thirds.

  • Here is a link to a video that does a nice job showing how much of a difference the rule of thirds makes in an artists composition.  Rule of Thirds.
  • Here is another video on composition.

Next we moved on to our main project, designing coasters.  They will go great with the mugs that we will design next week.

Mission #2
Your 2nd mission, should you choose to accept it, is to practice drawings for the mug  project we will complete next week.  You may draw whatever you like on your mugs, but again this week we will be practicing a different type of drawing that will help you overall in your drawing skills.   Enjoy the process.  Remember practice makes better.  Don't forget to bring your practice drawings to show the class and add to your portfolio.

(Note:  We will be drawing with regular sharpies on the mugs because the cost of oil based sharpies are prohibitive.  The mugs will be baked to help your drawings last longer, but they will eventually wash off.  If you would like a more permanent solution you are welcome to bring your own oil based marker for a more permanent drawing.  Walmart carries paint markers for around $2 each.)

This week we will be be exploring and practicing the art form of lettering.

1. Lettering Part 1

2. Lettering Part 2

Just for fun.

Week 1

Welcome to the support website for the Franklin Center Sharpie® Art Class.  We are sure to have a great time exploring this art medium for the next six weeks.

This site will review the material we covered in each class and post samples of your completed works.  You will also find links to help you practice your art when you aren't in class.  For best results, you should try to draw a little each day.

Friday we learned that drawing well is about your hand being able to do what your brain tells it to do.  If your brain doesn't have much practice at creating certain lines and shapes, the end result is that your sketches may not look at all like your minds eye.

Drawing is a skill and practice makes better.

We talked about two of the fundamental building blocks of art.

1.  The art element line.

2.  The art principle pattern.

If you would like to explore these topics further.  Here are a couple of great videos to watch.

  Elements of Art

Here is a video by Sharron Jeffus just using line to create a lion.  Link

Doodling is a great way to practice drawing and utilizing the elements and principles of art.  Here is a link to a lady who posts videos that teaches different types of doodle patterns.

Our first drawing project was to practice drawing with sharpies on index paper.  Index paper is a great for practice as it is inexpensive.  It is also nice to use index cards because it allows for short concise project.   Here is where I will post a few picture of your work.

We then started to decorate a large index card for the front of our scrapbooks.  I can't wait to see the results.  I am sure they will look great.

We didn't get to the rock decorating, but they will be available for you to complete if there is time in future classes.

Mission #1
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to practice drawings for the coaster project we will complete next week. The square coasters are 4x4, and the round have a 4" diameter.  You may draw whatever you like on your coasters, but each week we will be practicing a different type of drawing that will help you overall in your drawing skills.  It may also give you great ideas for your coaster project!  Enjoy the process.  Remember practice makes better.  Don't forget to bring your practice drawings to show the class.

He has filled them with skill to do every sort of work done by an engraver or by a designer or by an embroiderer in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen, or by a weaver—by any sort of workman or skilled designer.  "
